HYDERABAD: Five migrant workers died and another was injured on Thursday morning after falling from the 10th floor of an under-construction building of the state government's double-bedroom housing project at Rampally village in Keesara mandal.
The deceased were identified as Saif-Ul-Haq (26), Abhijit Roy (18), Saifal Rai (32), Shaik Milan (22) and Yash Kumar Chowdhary (30) from West Bengal and Bihar.
"The men were doing centring work around 11.30am when the scaffolding collapsed and they fell down," said ACP Shiv Kumar.
While four of them died instantly, one died in the hospital. The condition of the injured man, Beebul Roy (18), was stated to be critical. The bodies of the deceased were shifted to the Gandhi Hospital morgue.
The mishap led to tension at the site as workers barged into the office of the contractor executing the work and damaged the furniture.
Rs 15 lakh ex-gratia to the family of victims
Istihad Ahmad, safety officer of DEC Infrastructure that’s supervising the work, said, “I got to know about the incident from some of the workers who called me up. We usually check all safety measures, but this accident is very unfortunate. The police are investigating.”
In Rampally, about 6,264 units are being constructed with 52 blocks — each block consisting of about 120 houses. GHMC Mayor B Rammohan said an inquiry would be held to find out if there were any lapses in safety measures. He assured all necessary support for the family of the deceased while announcing an exgratia of ?15 lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased. “It is a very sad incident. We will make sure that the families get the ex-gratia from the labour department, GHMC and contractor,” Rammohan said.
