Reckless driving puts motorists as well as pedestrians at risk on this stretch

Motorists negotiating Santhome High Road in Mylapore have requested the Chennai Traffic Police to place barricades on the stretch as the lack of it tempts several motorists to indulge in rash driving and speeding.

It is a common sight to see motorists coming from Foreshore Estate violate lane discipline to avoid getting caught in the traffic congestion. Such reckless driving puts drivers coming from Light House to risk.

On Tuesday afternoon, a group of youngsters on high-end bikes were racing with each other while the traffic police deployed on the stretch remained mute spectators. “ The motorists don’t have the patience to wait even for a few minutes. They jump lanes and put other motorists at risk,” S. Sulochana Siva Kumar, a retired school teacher and a resident of Greenways Road said.

The lane violations are quite frequent on the stretch between St. Bede’s Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School and C.S.I. Higher Secondary School for the Deaf.

“Accidents are waiting to happen here. There are a lot of educational institutions on the stretch and such mindless driving only puts them in harm’s way. Putting up barricades will prevent motorists from jumping lanes and regulate the vehicular traffic in a proper direction,” R. Arul, a motorist, said.

A traffic police officer said that steps will be taken to place barricades at the earliest and ensure safety on this stretch.
