PATNA: The Bihar State Pollution Control Board (BSPCB) on Thursday issued ‘closure direction’ to 85 medical establishments and 50 pathological laboratories across the state for violating norms with regard to scientific storage, transportation and treatment of their bio-medical waste.
The BSPCB has asked civil surgeons to take action against the violators in their respective districts. The civil surgeons have also been asked to look for the alternative arrangement for the patients undergoing treatment at such establishments.
The North and South Bihar Power Distribution Company Limited has been given the list of the violators and asked to disable the electricity connection provided to them.
The BSPCB has been constantly taking action against the medical establishments, nursing homes and pathological laboratories in the state for violating the rules mentioned under Section 5 of Environment Protection Act, 1968. According to the rules, it is mandatory for the medical establishments and pathology labs to use biomedical waste treatment facilities (CBMWTFs) established in the state for proper disposal of the bio-medical waste generated during treatment of patients.
BSPCB scientist Naveen Kumar told this newspaper on Friday that the proposed closure directions for some of the medical establishments issued in the past had been revoked after they agreed to comply with the norms.
“We have been currently training owners of medical establishments in districts for proper storage, transportation and disposal of bio-medical waste,” Naveen said.
The BSPCB had issued ‘proposed direction of closure’ to around 1,030 medical institutions in 24 districts between October and December last year for not complying with the norms. Currently, the state has three CBMWTFs – one each at Patna, Muzaffarpur and Bhagalpur.
