Upcoming Mercedes ESF Concept Will Be Almost Impossible To Crash

Mercedes-Benz is working on a concept car that promises to be almost uncrushable – and not because it’s a concept and no one will drive it (well, duh), but because of the innovative tech it will feature.

Currently known as the ESF and previously the Experimental Safety Vehicle (ESV), this new Mercedes-Benz will be the company’s safest and play an important role in the carmaker’s long-term goal have eliminating road accidents altogether.

“Safety is the core DNA of Mercedes and the ultimate goal is zero accidents in traffic,” Mercedes research and development boss Ola Kalennius said.

Quizzed by Motoring about the vehicle during the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Kalennius refused to divulge specific details but we know for sure the car will utilize an advanced autonomous driving system.

“Things like autonomous driving and sophisticated driver assistance are all enablers to reduce traffic accidents. Because virtually all traffic accidents are human error,” Kalennius said.

“Having been in engineering for a couple of years, I’m absolutely amazed at the ingenuity and creativity of the engineers. It never stops. We will do something in the middle of this year, to demonstrate what the future of safety is going to look like. I don’t want to say what the features are [but] there are some things that are very hands on and very close to series deployment,” he added.

Although Mercedes is readying to unveil the ESF concept this year, it’s hard to say when the technologies from it will funnel into the marque’s production vehicles. Whenever they do arrive, they’re assured to first launch in range-topping luxury vehicles like the S-Class and E-Class sedans.
