AHMEDABAD: Vadodara boy Ashraf Kesrani, a student of Baroda Medical College, has topped the All India Postgraduate National Eligibility-Cum-Entrance Test (PG-NEET), posting first rank in the country.
Kesrani scored 1,006 out of 1,200 marks in the PG-NEET result declared on Thursday.


Belonging to a middle class family — his father works in a private firm — Kesrani said he has fulfilled his dream of getting into best medical college for higher medical studies without paying exorbitant fees.

“It was my dream to get top ranks so that I can study without putting my father under the financial burden of paying hefty fees for PG medical courses. I am happy that I have fulfilled this dream,” said Kesrani, who is the first in his family to become a doctor. He wishes to pursue MD medicine from Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi.

In all, 1.43 lakh students from India had appeared in the entrance test for admission in PG courses across Indian medical colleges out of which 78,660 students have qualified. In Gujarat, 6,000 students had appeared in the test.

Yash Shah of BJ Medical College in Ahmedabad has posted 15th rank, scoring 946 marks. He wishes to pursue MD medicine.

“I had expected to score between 850 and 900. This score is better than my expectations,” said Yash, who chose to self-study instead of joining any coaching class.


The young doctor had done well in class XII board exams also but had opted to get admission based on his All India NEET score.


Kavan Parikh, also of BJ Medical College, has scored 18th rank, getting 943 out of 1,200 marks. Kavan said he wishes to pursue medicine or radiology.


Fond of teaching, Kavan has been teaching his junior students in college. He says that his love for reading education related books has stood him in good stead.
