Berhampur: Ahead of assembly and Lok Sabha elections in the state, as many as 18 police officers, in the rank of inspectors in the southern police range, have been transferred to other police districts in the range. The southern police rang consists of five police districts — Berhampur, Ganjam, Gajapati, Kandhamal and Boudh.
“The transfer was made keeping in view the guidelines of the Election Commission of Indian (ECI), vacancy position, administrative requirements and interest of public services,” the order issued by the DIG (Southern range) Asish Kumar Singh said. The order was issued on Thursday evening.

According to the order, seven police officers under Ganjam police district, six in Berhampur and five in Gajapati district have been transferred. The police officers have been asked to immediately join their new place of posting.

Similarly, several officers in the rank of assistant sub-inspector have also been transferred.

A senior police officer said more police officers would be transferred to other places in the districts according to the guidelines of the ECI. Another list of transfer order is likely to be issued soon, he said. The ECI recently directed the state government to transfer all the officers, who have completed three years in a place or are serving in their home district. It also directed the state government to ensure that no district election officer, returning officer, assistant returning officer, police inspector, sub-inspector or above is posted in a district or assembly constituency if he or she has served there during any election prior to May 31, 2017.

The order would be applicable to all senior and junior officers in civil administration from collector to tehsildar and in police from inspector general of police to sub-inspector, an official source said.

According to the guidelines, several other officers in Ganjam, Gajapati and Kandhamal districts would also be transferred. Gajapati collector Anupam Saha said the district administration has already prepared a list of the officers and submitted it to the state government according to the guidelines of the ECI.
