‘Vantha Rajavathaan Varuven’ review: Where’s the comedy?

A drab subject that fails to appeal

I am searching for someone. It is the person who decided to abbreviate and promote Vantha Rajavathaan Varuven as VRV, somehow hinting that it could be as eventful as the actor’s romantic VTV. This latest Simbu flick is a dull, loud comedy that fails to go anywhere.

Vantha Rajavathaan Varuven
  • Genre: Comedy
  • Cast: Simbu, Megha Akash, Catherine Tresa, Prabhu
  • Storyline: The grandson of a business tycoon has to reunite his family

The story kickstarts with Aadhi (Simbu) who is the grandson of a rich businessman — played by Nasser, who looks classy but reels off laugh-worthy dialogues that play on the age-old ‘silent violent’ rhyme scheme. The businessman has everything in life – money and fame – but he yearns for the love of his daughter, who married an aspiring lawyer (Prabhu) against his will. Will Aadhi re-unite the family?

It’s not hard to see why Simbu would pick a script like VRV, a remake of Telugu hit Attarintiki Daredi. It has a lot of characters and the frames are colourful and crowded, like many of the previous Sundar C flicks. Though Simbu tries adding flavour to the unsubstantial storyline with punch dialogues and attempts at comedy, most of them fall short of the mark.

A below-average first half needed a strong second to revive things, but the film goes downhill there as well. Many characters – including the lead heroines Megha Akash and Catherine Tresa – come and go, but have little to do. The introduction of an amnesia angle to one of the characters makes things worse. Yogi Babu’s entry and some of his antics do liven things a little bit, but that’s only for a while, before an emotional climax that fails to strike a chord.

Director Sundar, a man who is well known for his comedies, would have done well to infuse better humour to this outdated script. With songs that spring out of nowhere and over-the-top fight sequences that have no business existing, VRV isn’t really the outing that the actor’s fans ought to celebrate with ‘paal abhisekams’ and cutouts.
