LUCKNOW: A day after the central government filed a plea on Ayodhya land issue in the Supreme Court, BSP supremo Mayawati said the step was motivated by BJP’s realisation that the BSP-SP alliance in UP would ensure that it does not return to power in the coming elections.

“The move by the Centre to file this petition in court is not just unnecessary interference by the government but a highly controversial step that aims to influence the 2019 Lok Sabha elections,” Mayawati alleged, saying that the move reeked of narrow-minded nationalism which was also visible in the Centre’s controversial Citizenship Amendment Bill which has brought the northeast states to a boil.

She said the petition was a means to disturb the existing environment around the land issue, calling the move inappropriate and inflammatory, a new tactic under its politics of electoral interests.

“BJP in the Centre is running a narrow minded government based on casteism and sectarianism, which follows a policy of religious divide, violence and nationalism,” she said.
