Goa's fish production down sharply

PANAJI: The state’s fish production has dropped sharply to 89,266 tonnes, down from 1,20,430 tonnes the previous year. Provisional figures in the economic survey reveal that the production of sardines, catfish, pomfrets, and crabs have hit a drastic low. In 2016, the fish production was 1,01,053 tonnes.


The figures further reveal that the highest drop in marine fish production was of sardines, with a drop of over 50%. In 2018 (till October), 38,551 tonnes of it were caught as opposed to the 16,504 tonnes in 2017. Back in 2016, the corresponding figure was 80,849 tonnes.

A similar downward trend was seen in total inland fish production, wherein 469 tonnes were caught in 2018 till October, down from 532 the previous year. Figures indicate a drop in the production of ladyfish, milk fish and gerres, among others. The numbers for ladyfish dropped from 180 tonnes in 2017 to 98 till October last year.
