Now, apply for weapon licence in Delhi at click of mouse

NEW DELHI: From February 1, all those who want an arms licence will no more have to go through a long and tedious process as Delhi Police has launched an online service through which a person can apply at the click of a mouse. Applicants can just log on to www.delhipolicelicensing.gov.in, fill in the details and wait for the application to be processed.

Police commissioner Amulya Patnaik told TOI, “The step has been taken to ensure ease of doing business. The online module for receipt and processing of application for granting arms licences and other related services is the latest digital initiative of Delhi Police that will improve service delivery by simplifying the licensing process without diluting the legal requirements.”


Apart from applying for new licences, the system can also be used for a range of related services, like renewal of existing arms licence, extension of area validity, registration of arms licence issued from other states and addition or conversion of weapon.

Special commissioner R S Krishnia said the system was designed, developed and implemented after consultations with all stakeholders and IT professionals. “The licensing unit has the onerous task of not only granting licences, but also ensuring that all conditions are strictly enforced so that safety, security and convenience of citizens are not compromised,” he added.

In this online module, the department has incorporated standard templates for field inquiries and other in-house processing to facilitate an objective assessment of the applications. The system has linked all 15 districts and the licensing unit for the purpose.

Joint commissioner (licensing) Prabhakar said that an applicant can now upload the required documents for verification. “The applicant can pay the fee online or through the POS at the licensing unit. They will also be able to check the status of their applications online,” he added.

Officers said this move will prove to be a game changer as it will not only reduce repetitive paperwork, but also minimise the physical interface between applicants and police. This will ensure time-bound service delivery and also give officers more time for better output.

The applicant will be required to visit the licensing unit only for the personal interview before the licensing authority and for the mandatory training on weapon handling and weapon inspection.

Patnaik said that using technology in all areas of policing remains his priority. “In today’s scenario, adoption of technology is no longer a luxury but an absolute necessity since a vast majority of people is computer-literate and have been using internet and smartphones in a big way. Delhi Police strives to use all possible technological means for bringing about a qualitative improvement in its service-delivery,” he added.
