MANGALURU: The open session of the 3-day 23rd Dakshina Kannada district Kannada Sahitya Sammelan that concluded on Thursday condemned proposed move by the state government to introduce English as medium of instruction in 1000 Kannada schools across Karnataka. Kannada medium schools should impart education in the stated medium itself and English should be just one of the languages that the students should study.
This is among the 8-point resolutions adopted unanimously, noted S Pradeep Kumar Kalkura, president of the district unit of the parishat. Noting that the state government should usher in uniform education policy across the state with focus on Kannada as medium of instruction, the sammelan also urged the government to introduce topics pertaining to personal health and hygiene as part of the syllabus for students to focus on their health.
Development projects under Smart City, expansion of state and national highways and those aimed at promoting tourism opportunities must take due care of heritage structures, buildings and strive to protect local environment. Yakshagana should be considered as representative cultural art form of the state, sammelan demanded in one voice. Vacant posts in government and aided primary and high schools should be filled at the earliest.
Kannada schools that have completed 100-years should be converted in to model schools and grants announced for the purpose released forthwith. The sammelan also batted for Tulu in demanding that this Dravidian language be declared a recognised language. The resolutions also reminded the government that resolutions adopted at previous editions of the sammelan and not implemented by the state government are taken up for implementation.
