GREATER NOIDA: Though Noida has started door-to-door waste collection, the Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority (GNIDA) on Wednesday made it clear that it would pick up only 15% of waste from the group housing societies and private builder complexes from March 15. Their bulk waste will have to be treated by them, within their compound, as per the municipal solid waste management (SWM) rules, 2016, officials said.
Greater Noida, an industrial town established in 1992, generates nearly 200 metric tonnes of waste daily.
“Any institution, builder apartment or society complex which generates waste above 100 kg is a bulk waste generator as per SWM rules 2016 and the responsibility of treating it at source lies with them. Hence, we have issued a notice to all such waste generators in Greater Noida area that GNIDA will not pick up their waste, post-March 15. Only 15 % excess bulk waste will be picked up by the Authority. The remaining will have to be treated within the complex,” Narendra Bhooshan, CEO of GNIDA, told TOI.
Officials said notices have already been sent to nearly 300 such complexes in Greater Noida area. However, the decision has evoked mixed reactions from residents of Greater Noida.
Sunita Vaid Dixit, RWA secretary, Eldeco Green Meadows in Sector Pi, has welcomed the move “in the interest of the city and its residents”.
“Residents in our society segregate waste at source. Our horticulture waste is wholly used as compost,” she said.
However, Alok Sadh, RWA president of Purvanchal Silver City 2 in Sector Pi-II, said, “Though we received the notice about two weeks back, we have been disposing our waste through third party currently. We do have separate blue, green bins for segregated waste in our society, but we have to figure out how to treat the waste within the complex through compost machines.”
The Noida Authority last week began door-to-door waste collection from five sectors and one village, which it called a soft launch before full-fledged services begin from March this year.
