GURUGRAM: The first electric train ran on Wednesday on the Delhi-Gurugram-Rewari rail route. It was flagged off by Union minister Rao Inderjit Singh. The minister said the electrification of this track will benefit millions of daily passengers between Rewari and Gurugram.

“After the change from meter gauge to broad gauge, this station is set to have all kinds of facilities, with help from the Centre,” he said.

The foundation stone of this project was laid down by Singh in August 2017. The overhead electrification of Delhi Sarai Rohilla-Gurugram-Rewari line (78 kms) was sanctioned as part of the electrification of Delhi–Ahmedabad section in 2014-15 at a cost of Rs 593 crore.

The work was carried out by Central Organisation for Railway Electrification (CORE) through a contractor, M/s Larsen & Toubro. “With the completion of the Rewari-Ahmedabad section in 2019-20, there will be significant improvement in the traffic level in the section. This will be facilitated with double-decker container trains,” said a senior Northern railway official.

The power supply station for the section is at Garhi Harsaru whereas the six switching stations (or electrical substations) are located at Patel Nagar, Rewari, Inchhapuri, Taj Nagar, Gurugram and Shahbad Mohammadpur.

Environmentalists said the move would bring down pollution levels.
