Duo was in need of money as they wanted to buy houses

Two men were arrested from central Delhi for allegedly staging a robbery to extort money from their employer for buying houses here, the police said on Wednesday. The accused have been identified as Harender (28) and Kamal (39), residents of Rudraprayag district in Uttarakhand and brothers-in-law, the police said.

On Tuesday, a man who owns an import and export business, filed a robbery complaint with the police. In the complaint, he said he had employed Kamal, Harender and Mukesh in his godown in Beadon Pura. On Tuesday, Mukesh collected ₹50 lakh from customers and handed over the amount to the complainant, who then passed it to Harender to keep it in his godown. But Harender did not return even after half-an-hour. When the complainant called Harender, he told him that four men had snatched the cash bag from him at gun point. The complainant rushed towards Harender, who was sitting near a bank on DBG Road. After questioning Harender, the police found several contradictions in his statement. There were minor cuts on his body but the injuries were a few days old, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Mandeep Singh Randhawa.

During interrogation, Harender confessed to his involvement in the crime along with Kamal. The accused had planned the robbery a day before. They were in dire need of money as they wanted to buy own houses in Delhi. Kamal initially feigned illness and stayed at the house as per plan and Harender handed over the mobile phone of his wife to Kamal so that nobody could doubt his role, Mr. Randhawa added. He said ₹50 lakh, two phones and a sharp edged object were recovered from them.
