KORAPUT: The CBI on Tuesday registered a case against 11 people, including a senior manager in the finance department at the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited’s engine division in Sunabeda, on charges of defrauding the company of more than Rs 13 crore.
The CBI, in a statement, alleged that between 2013 and 2017 the accused had entered into a conspiracy and misappropriated funds by transferring money to accounts of private contractors and others without any supporting documents.
Among those booked is Bhavan Maitra, senior manager (finance), as well as Abinash Kumar Sarkar, an assistant in the finance/accounts department. These two officials apart, the CBI has also booked three contractual workers — Manjula Padhy, Jyoti Padhy and Subhashree Das — and as many as six contractors who were involved with the Koraput unit of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and had an alleged role to play in the embezzlement of funds. Bipin Charana Maharana, Jagannath Apat, Jayaram Garada, Urdhaba Khosla, Sadananda Nayak and Jisudan Khosla are the contractors who have been named by the central investigating agency.
The CBI registered a case against the accused following a written complaint from Uday Kumar Rout, manager (vigilance), at HAL. The fraud came to light during an internal audit. The case was subsequently handed over to the company’s vigilance wing.
Maitra joined the finance section in 2011. It was his department which made payments to the company’s vendors. Here, with the help of fake bills and invoices, he managed to siphon off crores, a HAL official said.
In October last year, the agency had booked Maitra for alleged embezzlement of Rs 5 crore during January-August 2018. During a raid at his official residence, police had found half-burnt notes of various denominations worth around Rs 1.67 lakh. Maitra has been absconding since.
