Government clears 4.79 lakh homes for urban poor in single day
TNN | Feb 1, 2019, 05:03 ISTNEW DELHI: The housing ministry has approved construction of nearly 4.79 lakh houses for urban poor in a single day, taking the total number of houses sanctioned to around 72.66 lakh under the PM Awas Yojna.
The government has set a target of building about 1.2 crore houses in urban areas by 2022 under this scheme to achieve the goal of housing for all. The housing ministry has been maintaining that the target will be met much before the deadline. Till mid-January, around 15 lakh houses were built and another 37 lakh were under construction.
Housing ministry officials said to encourage and recognise the efforts put by states, municipalities and beneficiaries, Union minister Hardeep Singh Puri has approved the scheme to give best performers awards.
PMAY is one of the biggest flagship scheme that the government has undertaken and the progress is also being seen as a major achievement of Narendra Modi administration.
