Gelorup threat eases as firefighters work to contain blaze
The threat from a bushfire in Gelorup, in the state's South West, has been downgraded after firefighters contained the blaze.
The Department of Fire and Emergency Services downgraded the fire danger to advice level after an emergency alert was issued just after 10.30am on Thursday.
The fire is now contained and there is no threat to lives and homes. A lot of smoke is present in the area and about 80 hectares have been burnt.
The department urged residents to keep up to date in case the situation changed.
DFES had issued an emergency warning for people by Yolinda Drive, Marchetti Road, Woods Road and the northern part of Gelorup in the Shire of Capel, urging them to act immediately as the fire was out-of-control and unpredictable.
The fire broke out near the intersection of Marchetti Drive at 9.27 am and was moving in a westerly direction, but is now moving slowly in a north easterly direction.
Firefighters are at the scene, strengthening containment lines and aerial support has been called in to support ground crews.
No roads have been closed but people were asked to avoid the area, reduce speed and drive carefully through the smoke.
The department also urged residents to not fly a drone as it impacts firefighters' work.
