Pro Volleyball League franchise Chennai Spartans on Monday announced Shelton Moses as its captain for the inaugural edition.

Shelton Moses
Chennai:
“I want the team to be united at all times. If someone faces an issue, I must be there to communicate with him and sort it out. That will be my role during the event,” said newly-appointed Moses.
During the player draft, Spartans roped in Rudy Verhoeff and Ruslans Sorokins as its two overseas players. While Rudy represented Canada in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, Sorokins was part of the Latvian national team during the 2012 edition in London.
“We are fortunate to have two Olympians in our team. They arrived a bit late, but have adjusted pretty well in a short span of time,” Kumara, a FIVB Level-3 coach, said jubilantly about the foreign signings.
Moses seconded the head coach and added, “They are very friendly and they have shown great involvement. The duo has gelled well with the other members of the squad.”
The Chennai-based side has been sweating it out at the ICF Indoor Stadium since January 17. Kumara said that he has the arsenal to dish out good performances during PVL 2019.
“There will obviously be pressure, but we will sustain it. Unity and team work are important.”
Of the many modifications that are expected to be introduced in the league, two points for an ace will bring back a lot of focus on the service, according to Kumara. “Indians usually attack well at the international level. Now, they will realise the importance of serving at their best too.”
Canadian Rudy termed Indian attackers as ‘world class’ and added he signed up for the league to know more about the volleyball culture here.
Blocker Moses will lead the 12-man contingent during the six-team tournament, which begins on February 2. Indian international Naveen Raja Jacob will be his deputy, declared head coach MH Kumara at a press conference.
