Woman's body recovered after car falls into the ocean in Fremantle
A woman has been killed after the car she was passenger in drove off the edge of Fremantle's South Mole and plunged into the ocean on Monday evening.
Police rushed to the scene on Fleet Street, near Fremantle's Fishing Boar Harbour, after reports a Mitsubishi Magna wagon had been driven into the water just after 7pm.
A 75-year-old woman and an 81-year-old man, believed to be the driver, were in the car when it went off the road and fell into the ocean.
The woman became trapped in the submerged car an was unable to be rescued while the man managed to swim to safety. He was brought to Fiona Stanley Hospital where he remains in a stable condition.
A witness said the car appeared to be reversing on the thin strip of land towards the light house when it went off the rocks. A piece of car appears to have broken off and became stuck in the rocks.
At Bathers Beach, about 600 metres from South Mole, witnesses saw emergency lights and heard sirens rush to the scene.
Specialist police divers recovered the woman's body from the car on Monday night and water police retrieved the couple's Mitsubishi Magna from the water on Tuesday morning. There was no further damage to the car.
It is the second car to drive off Fremantle's South Mole since 2017.
