Two kindhearted boys have handed in a wallet filled with $600 in cash to police after discovering it on the side of a road.  

Lachlan Heng, 12 and Dardayne Russie, 14, stumbled across the wallet in Byford, south-east of Perth, on January 16 at 5.20pm.

The pair immediately turned over the large sum of money to officers in Mundijong so it could be returned to its 36-year-old rightful owner.

'Honesty, integrity and respect in our young Australians is a benchmark in our future. Thanks boys,' Mundijong Police tweeted. 

The good Samaritans were given framed awards for their efforts by Armadale Police District. 

The boys' mother, Vanessa Heng, took to Facebook to thank everyone for their comments of praise and encouragement. 

'Staying humble, kind and respected by the morals they have been brought up with will make them even more stronger young outstanding men,' she wrote. 

'We are so very proud of them both. Take care all and thank you again!'

The selfless act was posted on Mundijong Police's Twitter page with many positive reactions from users

The post, which was also shared on Facebook, garnered nearly 5000 likes and over 1000 shares. 

'Parenting done right. Great job kids,' one user wrote. 

One user on twitter referred to the young boys as 'future leaders'. 

'Hard to find good people doing good things in the world today good work to the young fellas involved,' another tweeted.
