CHENNAI: An initiative to establish a sports infrastructure on an open space reservation (OSR) land in the Chennai Metropolitan Area (CMA) is yet to see the light of the day. While the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) has earmarked funds for the Greater Chennai Corporation, the civic body is sitting over the allocation as the location for setting up the facility has not been finalised.
According to an official source with the Greater Chennai Corporation, the planning authority provided Rs 1.12 crore two years ago. While the CMDA has been pressing to create the facility in the extended areas of the corporation, sources said an OSR land parcel at Mugalivakkam was selected. “It, however, did not take off,” an official said. A few other locations, including Sholinganallur were explored, but nothing has materialised and the funds have remained unutilised, sources said.
In a bid to develop neighbourhood sports facilities for youth, the CMDA formulated a scheme to provide sports infrastructure on OSR land with a minimum of one-acre area.
As per the proposal, the sports infrastructure would be established in consultation with the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu and local bodies situated in the CMA, which comprises the city and fringes of Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts.
The facility is supposed to have an indoor sports stadium and associated infrastructure. Sources with the civic body said the final location will be picked out of four sites.
A senior corporation official said that an OSR land was identified for developing it as a playground under the funds provided by the CMDA initially.
The local residents wanted a park on OSR land, following which a park was developed under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) scheme. The scheme of the Union housing and urban affairs aims at providing basic civic amenities such as water supply, sewerage, urban transport and parks.
“Now, a new location has been identified in 91 Division (Mogappair) at Zone VII (Ambattur). After obtaining the CMDA concurrence, the work will be taken up,” the corporation official added.
CMDA member secretary Rajesh Lakhoni could not be reached for comments.
