ATLANTA – One of the biggest surprises at the Super Bowl’s Opening Night came from Devin McCourty.

The 31-year-old, who’s in his ninth season, said that he might retire following Super Bowl LIII against the Los Angeles Rams.

"I don't know for sure, man. But I do look at it - if we can win this game, winning with my brother [Jason], I don't know what else I could do that could top that," McCourty said. "So I'm just trying to make sure I enjoy this season [...]

"So I'm just trying to make sure I enjoy this season and enjoy these last couple days with these guys."

McCourty has been a staple of the Patriots secondary since being drafted in 2010. He’s been a full-time starter all nine seasons in Foxboro and had another good season in 2018, so the comments weren’t expected. McCourty started all 16 games this past season, finishing with 82 tackles and an interception, which returned for a touchdown.

Losing McCourty would be a big blow on and off the field. As a captain, McCourty is an invaluable leader for the Pats in the locker room. On the field, he does more than the box score will ever show. McCourty has one year left on his contract, but his cap hit balloons up to $13.435 million. His twin brother, Jason, is a free agent in March.

On Tuesday, Jason McCourty joked that he wasn’t shocked by his brother’s comments.

“He’s a drama guy, so I’m not surprised at all,” said Jason, who wouldn’t comment on whether or not he’d retire at the end of the season. “I’m not talking about retirement and all that. You guys got to find Dev around the hotel and ask him to go on further about his comments.”

Does that mean Jason McCourty will play next season?

"I’m playing on Sunday," he said.
