CHANDIGARH: The members of Chandigarh Residents Associations’ Welfare Federation (Crawfed) allege that Chandigarh municipal corporation (MC) is only sterilising 40% of the dogs in the city, thereby defeating the aim of the Animal Birth Control (ABC) programme, which was developed by World health Organization (WHO), as the only practical solution to control the street dog population and eradicate rabies.
According to People For Animals’ website, in cities where ABC has been wholeheartedly implemented, dog numbers and bites have been reduced and they have also become zero rabies zones. “Once the existing population is sterilised, the numbers will over time decrease,” stated the website.
The problem in Chandigarh though, claim various RWAs citing examples from their areas, despite MC’s claims that it has sterilised stray dogs in their areas, puppies are a common sight. Rajat Malhotra, general secretary of Crawfed, said that MC has to intensify their sterilisation programme to bring an effective end to stray dog menace.
