Renault says keeping the Clio's rounded exterior profile while lowering the body gives the new model a "more elegant and dynamic" look.

PARIS — Renault has taken an evolutionary approach to styling the new Clio, keeping the car's rounded exterior profile while lowering the body for better aerodynamics.

While the exterior may not mark a revolutionary change, the new Clio is different under the skin. The car is now underpinned by Renault-Nissan alliance's CMF-B architecture. The current version is built on the alliance's B platform.

Renault said the new platform can integrate the latest technologies to respond to new market requirements. The Clio will have advanced driver assistance systems leading to autonomous driving. The automaker will release the Clio's technical details next month.

The Clio, which debuts at the Geneva auto show on March 5, also gets chrome and gloss black trim in an effort to improve perceived quality.

Renault says the changes will give the Clio a "more elegant and dynamic" look.

The fifth-generation Clio enters a tougher market for small hatchbacks as buyers switch to high-riding SUVs and crossovers.

Renault released photos of the new Clio's exterior on Tuesday, after publishing interior pictures on Monday.

The Clio's grille is bigger, and the bumper is more prominent. The window trim is now chrome, while the current model's window-mounted door handles have been retained.

Other exterior changes include wind deflectors on the front wheel arches for improved aerodynamics, wider rear taillights, standard LED headlights, and a reworked trunk area that Renault says increases volume by 26 liters.

Overall, the new Clio is 14mm shorter and up to 30mm lower, depending on options, than the current model.

The new Clio is shorter and lower than the current model.

The Clio is Europe's best-selling model in the small-car segment. Sales of the Clio rose 2.2 percent to 328,536 in 2018, according to data from JATO Dynamics market researchers. The Volkswagen Polo was in second place with 294,493 sales and the Ford Fiesta was No. 3 with 269,945 sales. The Peugeot 208, which gets updated this year, was No. 4 with a volume of 227,372.

    Mild hybrid

The Clio will also be the first Renault model to use the company's E-tech mild hybrid technology. Renault says it will have 12 models with electrified drivetrains by 2022 as part of its Drive the Future strategic plan.

The Clio is built at Renault's plants in Bursa, Turkey; Flins, France; and Novo Mesto, Slovenia.
