Friederike Irina Bruning, a German national, was honoured with Padma Shri on Republic Day for her dedication towards caring stray cows in Mathura. She tends to over 1,800 cows and calves in a dingy and deserted lane of the temple town for the last 25 years. The 61-year-old German national was locally known as Sudevi Mataji. To take care of the stray animals, there are about 60 workers for which Friederike Irina Bruning has to spent around Rs 35 lakh on salaries, food grains and medicines.
