Taking up the controversial Citizenship Amendment Bill as a poll issue, BJP President Amit Shah on Tuesday attacked West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, and her Trinamool Congress (TMC) for opposing the interest of refugees “who have faced religious persecution”.
Speaking at a public rally in Contai in the Purba Medinipur district, 160 km from Kolkata, Shah alleged that infiltrators were welcomed since they constitute a “vote-bank” for the TMC.
“I would like to ask Mamata didi if she will support the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in Rajya Sabha or not… They (TMC) welcome infiltrators and illegal immigrants, but there’s no place for the refugees who have faced religious persecution,” he said.
This is the second public rally in the State where Shah has attacked Banerjee and her party for opposing the Citizenship Bill. In a previous rally at the border district of Malda, 400-odd km from Kolkata, the BJP President had raked-up the issue, claiming that the BJP will deal with issues such as infiltration, cattle-smuggling and persecution of refugees.
