A small political party has staged a mock sacrifice of a watermelon on a Cape Town beach in response to the slaughter of a sheep in December.

The Cape Party posted a video of the stunt on its Facebook page in which the party's founder and leader, Jack Miller, can be seen carrying a large knife.

"Following the shocking slaughter of a sheep on Clifton 4th Beach last month, the CAPE PARTY's response to EFF radicals was this age old Cape tradition. Capetonians must not take a backward step against this aggressive cultural imperialism which seeks to eradicate our way of life," read a statement that accompanied the video.

In the video, Miller refers to the Cape's "multi-ethnic culture" and says "unlike other cultures in Southern Africa, here in the Cape we have a different culture. We do not slaughter animals and we do not tolerate racism – no – here in the Cape we do things differently."

He then dramatically chops the watermelon and distributes it among party members.  

The party states on its website that its goal is to have the Western Cape declared an independent state, but it has not managed to muster much support.

According to the Electoral Commission of SA's official results page, the Cape Party received 4 473 votes in the 2016 municipal elections, which amounted to 0.10% of the provincial vote and 0.01% of the national vote.
