Union Minister and senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Nitin Gadkari on Sunday said leaders who promise to make dreams come true are liked by people, but failing to fulfil them leads to a beating by the public.

“People like political leaders who show them dreams. But if those dreams are not fulfilled then people beat them up. Therefore show them the dreams which you can fulfil,” Mr. Gadkari told party workers.

Mr. Gadkari was speaking at a programme to launch BJP-affiliated transport union Nav Bharatiya Shiv Vahtuk Sanghatana in Mumbai. Former Shiv Sena leader Haji Arafat Sheikh joined the party and was appointed the president of the organisation. Actor Isha Koppikar joined the BJP at the function and was appointed the working president of the women wing of the organisation.

“I am not one who only shows dreams, but I deliver 100%,” he said. His statement comes on a day when Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Tamil Nadu, with comments of ‘go back Modi’ trending on Twitter.

“People used to laugh at me when I as a PWD minister (in Maharashtra) used to claim that I was going to build over 50 flyovers in Mumbai or bring down the travel time between Mumbai and Pune to two hours. I was ridiculed but I proved them wrong and completed every project I had promised,” Mr. Gadkari said.

The minister also said media persons in Mumbai know what kind of a person he is as they have seen how he completes projects. “They do trust me,” he said.
