Swacchata Abhiyan volunteers under the auspices of Ramakrishna Mission took up the eighth shramdan, under the last phase of five-year clean Mangaluru campaign, at Bunder area here on Sunday.
Rameeza Nasir, councillor, Bunder ward, launched the shramdan at Azizuddin Road.
Kandathapalli Jumma Masjid and Car Street areas were cleaned. Five heaps of garbage were lifted from the areas.
Women volunteers swept clean the roadsides, footpaths, etc. The black spots that were cleaned were converted into green spots by placing flower pots.
Care will also be taken to see that these spots will be maintained clean in future too, the mission said in a press release.
Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Nasir said the mission has been successful in instilling awareness about cleanliness in the minds of people for the past four years.
Meanwhile, students of Karnataka Polytechnic took up cleanliness work on Udupi–Mangaluru national highway on Sunday.
In all, six Swacch Soch seminars have been held in connection with Swacch Mangaluru Abhiyan in different colleges.
They were conducted in the University College, Ramakrishna Degree College, Srinivasa Degree College, Govt. ITI College, the University College Post-Graduation Section, and in Srinivasa Physiotherapy Colleges.
