‘Create council for traditional medicinal practitioners’

Tirupur: More than 50 traditional medicinal practitioners staged a protest in front of the city corporation building on Monday urging the central and state government to constitute a separate council to govern their profession.

Tirupur district organiser of International Traditional Medicine Association (ITMA) R Gopalsamy said, “We don’t have educational qualifications as mandated by the government, we practice medicines like siddha, unani and homeopathy that were taught to us by our forefathers and gurus.”

“If the government wants to frame courses for these medicines, they can do only with the help of traditional medical experts. However, the present situation doesn’t allow us to practice,” Gopalsamy said.

Hence to streamline our profession and give us clarity, a council that can govern the traditional medicinal practices should be in place, he explained.

The organiser also said unlike allopathy doctors, they don’t have money to establish clinics. tnn
