Activists angry over handling of national flag

Vadodara: Activists are seeing red over the manner in which the national flag on the highest flag mast in the state at Sama pond was carried after it was brought down on the Republic Day. The flag was stuffed in a drum without folding it.

The tricolour that was supposed to be an iconic one has been mired in a controversy after it was unfurled on the eve of the Independence Day by chief minister Vijay Rupani. The flag tore repeatedly and had to be brought down for repairs. Eventually it was decided that the flag will be unfurled only on important days.

The flag was unfurled on the Republic Day on Saturday, but was brought down in the evening itself. Staff of the Vadodara Fire and Emergency Services of the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) tried to stuff it inside a drum, but a part of it remained outside. It was carried in an ambulance.

Activists led by Atul Gamechi have condemned the act and said that the dignity of the national flag was not maintained by those who brought it down. They said that it should have been handled and transported in a better manner.

The 67meter high flag pole is the highest in the state. The VMC has also planned a flag park at the Sama pond where the flag has been installed.
