BIS branch starts in Hubballi
Basavaraj Kattimani | TNN | Jan 28, 2019, 06:57 ISTHubballi: The new branch of Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) will start functioning on Monday from the first floor of KSFC building at Rayapur, Hubballi. It will function from a 2,500 sqft space for some time before shifting to its own building in Hubballi.
For the past few years, people of North Karnataka have been demanding a BIS branch in Hubballi. After constant efforts of local leaders, the Centre sanctioned the BIS branch to Hubballi a few months back. It will play a significant role in helping industrialists of the region get their products ISI certified within a short period.
Speaking to TOI, Nagesh, joint director, District Industry Centre (DIC), Rayapur said, “The new BIS branch is usually run by consumer affairs, food and public distribution department, but in Dharwad district, DIC has been given an additional charge to look after the branch.”
He said that in the absence of a BIS branch people in the region would often travel to Bengaluru or Pune to get their products certified by the regional centre. “They would travel along with samples of their industrial and consumer products to get it tested by BIS for certification process,” he said.
The new branch will collect samples of products from industrialists and send them for lab test to Bengaluru. “So, industrialists need to wait for some days to get their products certified with an ISI mark after proper lab test,” he added.
Ramesh Patil, former president of Karnatak Chamber of Commerce and Industries, and industrialist said, the new branch will definitely help industrialists of North Karnataka who earlier used to spend thousands of rupees to get certification.
“Due to the absence of BIS branch in our region, some people used to sell their products particularly food items and other end-users items without ISI mark as many consumers are not aware of this certification. With the functioning of BIS branch in Hubbalil, many people would come to know of the importance of consuming products bearing an ISI mark. The new branch will also encourage people to maintain quality in their products to get it certified compulsorily,” he said.
