Man arrested for extortion attempt
TNN | Jan 28, 2019, 23:29 ISTBhubaneswar: The cyber cell of Crime Branch in Cuttack arrested a man on Monday on charges of attempting to extort money from a girl by threatening to circulate her obscene photographs on social media. The accused was identified as Ratan Behera, a resident of Jaleswar area in Balasore district.
Sources said Behera, who allegedly posed as Sandeep Mahapatra, was arrested from Gujarat. Additional director general of police (Crime Branch) Santosh Upadhyay said the cyber police registered a case against Behera on January 16 after receiving complaint from the 20-year-old girl, who alleged that he had been threatening to defame her on social media. According to the complainant, he befriended her on Facebook with a fake identity a few months ago. In her complaint, she alleged that he took her cellphone number and started chatting on WhatsApp.
“I was shocked when he started sending me obscene messages and photographs. He also demanded sexual favours from me. When I strongly objected, he threatened to morph my photos and circulate those on YouTube and porn portals. He also morphed the photograph of one of my family members and circulated those on social media,” her complaint read. tnn
The cyber cell tracked his mobile phone and arrested him from a city in Gujarat. The probing officials seized a fake voter identity card in name of Sandeep Mahapatra from Behera, who was booked under sections 292 (sale of obscene materials), 354-D (stalking), 465 (forgery), 469 (forgery for purpose of harming someones reputation) and 385 (putting a person in fear in order to commit extortion) of IPC and 67/67A (publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form) of Information Technology Act 2000.
