‘1,800 inactive industrial plots taken back’

Nagpur: State industries minister Subhas Desai said as many as 1,800 plots of land in Maharashtra Industries Development Corporation (MIDC) estates have been taken back from original allottees. The action was taken since no units were started on the plots by the firms allotted the land.
Desai, a Shiv Sena leader, was in the city to inaugurate a job fair named after the party’s founder late Balasaheb Thackeray. He also said the industries department is coming up with stricter rules on wresting back land from non-starters. The current norms allow allottees to buy time and sit on the plot by securing extension after extension. Many allottees simply build a shed on the plot and do not carry out any further development. Even loans are secured on the basis of such basic construction. Even if there is a basic set up on the site, MIDC cannot take the land back right away. A stricter policy, which will plug all the loopholes, will be out soon, said the minister.

Replying to a question on Bhosari land case near Pune, in which former revenue minister Eknath Khadse was accused of having cornered MIDC land valued at Rs40 crore for Rs3.75 crore, Desai said nothing has been found against him in the investigations. Now the state government is waiting for the court order on the issue.

On the job fair, Desai said 54 companies had registered for the event held here. The department had received over 6,000 online applications, out of which 900 candidates have been selected in the preliminary round.

The industries department has been organizing employment meets for educated unemployed persons at many places. The aim of these events is to create a link between the unemployed and industrialists of the area so that the former get jobs. Educated unemployed persons are also encouraged to become self-employed, he said.

Such meets have been earlier organized at Pune, Nashik, Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Kolhapur and Aurangabad.

Chairman of Maharashtra State Mining Corporation Ashish Jaiswal said local youths have got jobs in mineral based industries located in the region. Due to availability of mineral resources in Vidarbha a number of related industries have come up here.

Minister for power Chandrashekhar Bawankule said the state government has reduced power rates for Vidarbha and Marathwada, which had benefited industries in these regions.
