Glenn Close is your best leading lady!
The 71-year-old actress took home the statue for outstanding performance by a leading actress at Sunday night’s Screen Actors Guild Awards for her role in The Wife.
Close beat out Emily Blunt (Mary Poppins Returns), Olivia Colman (The Favourite), Lady Gaga (A Star Is Born), and Melissa McCarthy (Can You Ever Forgive Me?).
“Oh my gosh. I am so proud to be in this union. I am so proud to receive this award from my fellow actors,” the actress said.
She continued, “One of the most powerful things that we have as human beings is two eyes looking into two eyes. Film is the only art form that allows us the closeup. It substitutes for real life two eyes looking into two eyes.”
Close added, “I think we have to remember how powerful that is in a world that is consumed with different sized screens. The power that we have are two human eyes looking into other two human eyes. That’ll give us empathy and understanding.”

Close is coming off a hot year so far, in which she has already nabbed two awards as the leading lady in The Wife.
Earlier this month, she was named best actress in a drama at the 2019 Golden Globes. She also tied with Lady Gaga for best actress at the Critics’ Choice Awards.
Of her role playing Joan Archer, a woman living in the shadow of her Nobel Prize winning husband, Close said it allowed her to embrace her sexuality.

“I feel as free and as creative, as sexual and as eager, as I ever have,” Close told The Guardian. “And it’s ironic because I’m thinking: ‘How much time do I have left now?’ There are so many things I’m interested in doing.”
“It’s one of those ironies, I suppose, that we sometimes start feeling comfortable in our own skin only late in our lives, but hopefully with enough time to benefit from it,” she added.

This award becomes Close’s ninth SAG Award nomination and only her second-ever win. In 2005, she earned the statue for best female in a TV movie or miniseries for her role in The Lion in Winter. It also becomes her first SAG nomination since 2012.
The 25th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, hosted by Megan Mullally, were broadcast live from Los Angeles on both TNT and TBS.
