THANE: The ATS arrested a 24-year-old man from his rented apartment in a Mumbra highrise late on Saturday for his proximity to the nine youths who were picked up last week on the suspicion of being radicalised by the extremist ISIS ideology.
The police said Talha Potrick, also known as Anu Bakr Hanif Potrick, is a native of Khed taluka in Kongan, and has been living with his mother in the Shil-Daighar flat since July 2018. Earlier, they lived in the densely-populated Amrut Nagar area of Mumbra. His father works in Kuwait, said the police.
Potrick’s endorsement of the ISIS thought-line is evident from his social media profile too, said the police, refusing to divulge details. A source said the cops were on Potrick’s trail for a long time and that he was a close associate of Mazhar Shaikh, who was among the nine youths picked up last week from Mumbra-Kausa and Aurangabad. Eight of the nine were arrested and one detained as he is a minor.
“Potrick was in contact with a Syria-based ISIS handler online. We are scrutinising his associations. He has been in touch with youths from Konkan and Marathwada,” an official said.
The late-night raid led to the seizure of a laptop, tablet, harddisk, pen drives, router, mobile phones, diaries as well as some jihad literature,” added the source. Locals said Potrick was an arts graduate and was working with a shipping firm.
