MUMBAI: A 22-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly strangling his 7-year-old nephew and then slitting his throat with a beer bottle. The police said that Naushad Ansari, a zari worker, murdered the boy, Mohammed Irfan, as the child’s parents treated him shabbily.
Ansari, who used to live with the boy’s family in Rafi Nagar in Deonar, has alleged that they used to take away all that he earned, did not even provide him proper food and heaped insults on him. “Angry over this, he decided to get even with his brother and sister-in-law by targeting the child,” said a police officer.
The boy had gone missing on Saturday after which his parents lodged a missing person’s complaint at Shivaji Nagar police station, said senior inspector of Shivaji Nagar police station, Deepak Pagare. Initially, the police filed a case of kidnapping as it involved a minor. The child’s body was found at a parking lot near the Freeway at Govandi on Sunday morning, said Pagare.
While making enquiries with family members, the police said they found Ansari was giving “evasive” replies. Also, by then, they had learnt that Ansari was seen with the boy near the railway station in the evening before the murder. “We grilled him about this and his replies continued to be evasive. Eventually, he admitted that he had kidnapped the child and also went on to give us details about how he had killed him,” said another police officer.
The officer said that Ansari has said he was angry at the manner in which he was being treated by the boy’s parents and decided to take revenge. “He said he was often humiliated by the boy’s parents. We have arrested Ansari. He has been charged with kidnapping and murder. He will be produced in court,” said the officer.
In 2013, the 13-year-old son of a diamond broker from south Mumbai was killed allegedly by 28-year-old his cousin and his accomplice. The cousin had allegedly kidnapped and killed the teenager with the intention of demanding ransom. The police said he needed the money to cover up losses he had incurred in betting over cricket matches, the police had said.
Similarly, in September last year, a man from Tiwala was arrested for allegedly killing his minor nephew. The 16-year-old, a student of Class X, was stabbed with a knife after his uncle had a dispute with the teenager over money while they were having dinner at a Chinese restaurant.
