Bid to woo tourists to coconut capital of TN

In a bid to further push for patronage of their historic Pollachi Station and the train services to the town, the Pollachi Train Passengers Welfare Association has put up a board showing popular tourist spots in and around the coconut capital of the state.
They have also taken initiative to put up a board showing the train services available to other towns with their timings.

Pollachi Station, which remained closed since 2007 for broad-gauge conversion work, has a history dating back to 1898, when the first train chugged into its tracks.

It became a full-fledged passenger station in 1915. Steeped in history, many people in the region consider the Pollachi Station a charming spot to visit in the town. “Not many people know these facts. So, the Palakkad DRM had suggested that we promote tourism by informing passengers about tourist spots in Pollachi. So, we did the same,” secretary of the association B Mohanraj said.

The association has put a bright green colour board showing 14 tourist spots in and around Pollachi, including Monkey Falls, Parambikulam Dam, Valparai and Thirumoorthy Hills.

“We hope that this will help boost the tourism economy like restaurants, hotels, homestays and tourist taxis in and around Pollachi, while also bringing in more passengers to the station and the train,” Mohanraj said.

“We hope the increased patronage and crowd will in turn lead to an increase in train services between Pollachi and other towns like Dindigul, Coimbatore, Palakkad, among others, because we have five platforms,” he added.
