Man held with Rs 72 lakh old currency notes

PANCHKULA: Police arrested a man after banned currency notes worth Rs 72 lakh were recovered from him on Saturday.
According to sub-inspector Mulk Raj, police post in-charge, Amravati Enclave, they had received a complaint from Vikramjit Singh of Ludhiana that he along with his friends had gone to Shimla, where they met one Karambir Singh of Butana village, near Karnal, and became friendly. One of Vikramjit’s friends was in the business of exchanging currency notes and Karambir proposed to exchange old currency notes amounting to Rs 1 crore on a good commission.
After Vikramjit returned to Ludhiana, he received a call from Karambir asking him to arrange for exchanging the old currency notes. Vikramjit informed the police.
On Saturday, Pinjore police laid a trap at the entry gate of Amravati Enclave. Cops stopped a white Maruti Breeza (PB-48-E-8500) being driven by Karambir and recovered old currency notes packed in a carry bag in the boot of the car. Police found 6,700 currency notes of Rs 1,000 denomination amounting to Rs 67 lakh and 990 currency notes of Rs 500 denomination amounting to Rs 4.95 lakh.
A local court remanded the accused in police custody for two days.
