[Perspectives] William Dietz: shaping science and policy on obesity

When William Dietz began his career in the late 1970s, research on childhood obesity was in its infancy. “When I started, there were only three people working on childhood obesity in the USA”, he says. “I've always been interested in questions that nobody could answer because those questions identify a frontier of knowledge. Almost any question I asked back then didn't have an answer.” Since then, Dietz has devoted more than four decades to studying, preventing, and controlling undernutrition and overnutrition and is now Chair of the Sumner M Redstone Global Center for Prevention and Wellness at the George Washington University, Washington, DC, USA.
