Bihar: Two home guards hacked to death by poachers inside Valmiki Tiger Reserve

PATNA: Unidentified poachers, armed with sharp edged weapons, hacked to death two home guards inside Valmiki Tiger Reserve (VTR) at Bagaha town in West Champaran after midnight on Saturday.
Police said that the slain guards were identified as Arjun Yadav and Hiralal Kushwaha. They said that another home guard Pradeep Mahto was critically injured in the attack who was rushed for emergency medical attention to a hospital in the town area.
Muzaffarpur zonal IG Sunil Kumar said that a team of home guards were on patrol in the forest area which falls under Gobrahiya police station area in Bagaha.
“Some poaching activity was going on in the area which was spotted by the guards and they had perhaps resisted it. The guards were outnumbered by poachers who attacked them with iron rods, sticks and other sharp edged object resulting death of two at spot immediately,” he said adding all the guards on patrol were unarmed.
The IG said that Bagaha SP Arvind Kumar Gupta and forest department officials had visited the spot on Sunday morning. He said that villagers in the neighbourhood of the area were quizzed by police and raids were going on to nab the accused persons.
According to police sources, a team of seven guards were on patrolling inside forest in Naurangia area of VTR when they spotted a poacher laying traps and nets.
“The poacher was nabbed by the guards when he called other using an dialect spoken in the area which the guards failed to understand. Armed with axes and other sharp weapon, the poachers who were more than 20 in count, attacked the guards killing two at spot. They were attacked on head and neck,” sources said adding that rest guards somehow managed to escape from spot and survive.
Slain Yadav was a native of Jurapakar under Bhairoganj police station area while Kushwaha was native of Malpurwa under Town police station, both in Bagaha town in the district. The autopsy was conducted at sadar hospital in Bagaha.
