Two killed in row over constructing leach pit at Udupi

MANGALURU/UDUPI: Row over construction of leach pit resulted in double murder at Manur, Kota in Udupi district, here, late on Saturday night. The duo, who came in support of their friend, were attacked with lethal weapons by the accused Reddy brothers from Kota.

The victims have been identified as Bharat Poojary (26), resident of Padukere, an auto-rickshaw driver and Yatish Kanchan (27), resident of Chitrapady, who worked as personal assistant to politician Rakesh Malli till recently. While Bharat died on the spot, Yatish was declared brought dead at hospital. The incident took place around 11pm on Saturday.

Three brothers Harish Reddy, Rajashekhar Reddy and Chandrasekhar Reddy are suspects of double murder. Apart from them, there are four others suspects, according to police.

Explaining on how the entire incident took place, police said that a year ago, Lohith Poojary of Barekere had bought a house at Manur. The house is situated adjacent to the residence of Reddy brothers. A few days ago, Reddy brothers were trying to dig a leach pit close to Lohith’s well and he had objected citing water contamination.

However, Reddy brothers did not give heed to his plea and continued their work. Lohith, later went and complained to local panchayat as well health department. According to police, on Friday, panchayat and health department officials visited the spot and asked Reddy brothers to stop the work. The order from officials irked the Reddy brothers, who have criminal antecedent.


On Saturday, Lohith had gone to a function and on the way back noticed that some persons were following him from Kota in a car. He suspected threat to his life but managed to reach home safe. After reaching, he phoned his close friends and victims Yatish and Bharat asking them to rush to his house.


When they arrived, a gang waiting in a car near Kota, attacked them with lethal weapons. Bharat died on the spot and Yatish succumbed to his injuries on the way to hospital.


According to sources from police department, the incident was pre-planned. The suspects Harish and Rajashekar have many cases registered against them and are currently absconding. A case has been registered at Kota police station and an investigation is on.
