KOLKATA: The countdown to the city’s mega event has begun. Come Thursday and the Kolkata Book Fair will be inaugurated at Salt Lake’s Central Park.
On Sunday, with only four days to go to the long-awaited carnival, labourers were toiling hard, erecting stalls, trying desperately to make up for the lost time. Preparations for the book fair suffered this year as work had begin days after the Bidhannagar Fair ended on January 3, only to be put on hold a few days as Trinamul activists came in hordes and were housed at Central Park before and after chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s Brigade rally.
Around 35,000 supporters from north Bengal stayed at the Central Park grounds because they couldn’t be put up at the Salt Lake stadium where football matches were on.
Therefore, lot of pressure on Publishers and Booksellers’ Guild. They have deployed 16 decorators to put up the stalls before Thursday. On Sunday, labourers were seen hammering and sawing without stop. They are going to create the stalls from the many tents that were erected for the Trinamool supporters a week ago. Members of S K Star Decorators have brought in the ACs. The tents will need lots of ACs.
