Tirupur: A couple was arrested for killing a 25-year-old man, who threatened their newly-married daughter at Udumalpet in the district on Saturday.

The deceased was identified as V Murugavel of Kandiyakouden Pudur near Udumalpet. “His family had migrated to Tirupur from Balasamudram near Palani in Dindigul district. He was working as a wall painter. Murugavel was in a relationship with the daughter of S Karuppasamy, his neighbour. Though he wanted to marry her, the woman objected. With her parents’ support, she married a man from Kangeyam six months ago,” a police officer said.

The couple visited Karuppasamy’s house on Friday. “Murugavel came to the house and quarrelled with Karuppasamy. He wanted to know why the girl rejected him. As the quarrel turned violent, Karuppasamy caught hold of Murugavel and his wife Deivanai, 42, hit him with an iron rod,” the officer told TOI.

Murugavel, who received serious injuries on his head, was rushed to the Udumalpet Government Hospital. But he was declared brought dead. Subsequently, Udumalpet police arrested Karuppasamy and Deivanai.

When police tried to shift the body to the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital for conducting postmortem, Murugavel’s relatives objected and staged a road blockade. Postmortem was conducted in the Udumalpet hospital and the body was handed over to the victim’s family.
