VADODARA/ ANAND: For the first time since its inception ,Vallabh Vidyanagar-based Sardar Patel University (SPU) is set to adopt centralised online admission process for the undergraduate (UG) courses offered by its 149 affiliated colleges.

SPU will adopt the the model followed by the admission committee for professional courses (ACPC), which conducts the admissions for degree engineering courses in Gujarat, in BA, BCom and BSc streams among others.

The new format for admissions will be introduced from the forthcoming academic year. The new procedure will come as a big relief to the students who otherwise had to approach individual colleges and fill up multiple forms to get admission in traditional streams.

“Students will not have to physically approach the head office as they will be able to get their application forms online from our official website,” SPU vice-chancellor professor Shirish Kulkarni told TOI.

“After submitting the form fees online, the students will be informed about the intake capacity in individual colleges in different courses. There will be help centres set up at different colleges where the original documents will be verified. Similar to the ACPC model, the students will fill the form online mentioning the colleges and stream of their choice through mock round,” he said.

Once, a student finalizes his or her choice, he or she has to submit the fees and complete the required admission process at the college that has been selected in the mock round while the name of the students and the seat secured by him or her will get automatically withdrawn from the total intake capacity and list of aspirants.

The university will conduct three mock rounds. “Those students who cannot secure admission during the three rounds, will get an opportunity to contact the colleges offline after the mock rounds are over,” he said.

SPU has decided to hold awareness camps in schools while principals and teachers of colleges will be trained to help the aspirants.

“We will collect the results declared by the Gujarat State Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) in CD format so that the marks mentioned by the aspirants can be instantly verified,” he said.

Students from outside Gujarat who otherwise have to physically procure provisional eligible certificates from SPU head office will also benefit as such certificates will be automatically generated.

Students of Anand and Kheda districts will get first preference as 70 % of total seats will be reserved for them while 30 % of seats will be for students from other districts of Gujarat and those from outside the state.
