“A blend of two cultures”: Thailand’s Centara embarks in the Middle East

Thailand’s homegrown hospitality group, Centara Hotels & Resorts, debuted in Qatar recently and revealed to us its plans to double its portfolio in the UAE.
In December 2018, the group introduced its first property in Qatar with the launch of a new seafront hotel and residences in the West Bay District of Doha. Centara West Bay Residences & Suites Doha, the impressive new property, features 265 rooms including a range of rooms, suites and penthouses.
“A major family destination hotel”
Tom Thrussell, VP of brand and marketing, said: “Before the opening of Centara West Bay Residences & Suites Doha last December, we had just opened our first hotel in Muscat in 2017.
“We are opening a new hotel in downtown Doha, and with our partners, Nakheel, we are developing a major family destination hotel and waterpark on Deira Island in Dubai. By 2020 we expect to have 1,800 keys in the Middle East.”

Key strategies
Over the next few years, Centara plans to continue growing – and doubling its revenue – by executing three broad strategies.
The company plans to double the number of properties it operates via new investments and management agreements; identify and pursue new business opportunities outside its hotel and resort core; and strengthen its core infrastructure, including operating platforms, technology and reputation.
A blend of two cultures
Jari Nielsen, the interim general manager at Centara West Bay Residences & Suites Doha, commented about introducing the Asian experience to the Middle East market:
“We are delighted to move into the Middle East and will bring our experience and Thai hospitality with us, which we will fusion with our admiration of the local culture. We believe a blend of the two cultures will make us successful and are very excited to welcome our guests and residents to our new and future properties in the country.”
Nielsen further noted that Centara’s colourful history, as well as its warm Thai-influenced hospitality, are the key factors to its success.
“From 10 properties to over 63 in 12 countries”
Thrussell concluded: “Over the past 10 years, Centara has grown from an important domestic hotelier in Thailand to become one of the most distinctive hospitality companies in Asia.
“We have grown sixfold from 10 properties to over 63 in 12 countries, opened or under development. We operate large convention centres and hotel complexes in Bangkok, hotels and resorts in all the most desirable Thai destinations, and a growing network in Southeast Asia, North Asia, and the Indian Ocean.”
