HYDERABAD: In 23 days, Rachakonda police recorded eight social media harassment and cyber-stalking complaints. Three FIRs have been filed.

Last year, the commissionerate had registered 24 cases of social media harassment, of which 16 were Facebook-related cases and five were related to WhatsApp harassment.

Cases of creating a fake profile with an intention to defame the victims were as high as 19 in 2018. In 80% of the cases, the accused had uploaded or circulated morphed photos of the victim to defame her.

“Social media harassment and cyber stalking cases are on the rise since the year started. Recently, a 17-year-old boy was apprehended for cyber stalking,” said ACP cyber crime (Rachakonda), S Harinath. According to police, the minor would call frequently to harass the victim and later started sending vulgar photos over WhatsApp. “Women should be cautious and not respond to strangers’ calls. Social media has become a hub for cyber frauds,” added the ACP.

According to a source, most victims file general diaries with the cops rather than FIRs. “Police, however, insists on filing an FIR so that the offender can be arrested and booked for the serious offence,” said a cop.
