MUMBAI: After a prolonged spell of chill, Mumbai's minimum temperature as recorded by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday was seen rising. From a day earlier, Sunday witnessed a significant rise of over five degrees Celsius in its minimum temperatures. Weathermen have forecast that the week may also begin with minimum temperature hovering around 17-18 degrees Celsius.

The minimum temperature recorded on Sunday by the IMD Santa Cruz Observatory was 18.6 degrees C, which was 1.3 degrees above normal. Just a day ago, the minimum temperature recorded on Saturday was 13.2 degree Celsius.

Meanwhile, the minimum temperature recorded at IMD Colaba was 19.5 degrees C.

Residents said that the rise in temperatures was evident. "As compared to the last few days, the chill was comparatively lesser on Sunday morning. Many of us who go on morning walks had come without our sweaters that we had been putting on regularly during the past whole week," said Ghatkopar resident Jagruti Patil.

Maximum temperature in the city was seen hovering around 30 degrees C on Sunday. The maximum temperature recorded by the IMD Colaba and Santa Cruz Observatory was 30 degrees and 30.6 degrees Celsius respectively.

K S Hosalikar, deputy director general of meteorology at the regional India Meteorological Department (IMD), said the easterly winds were causing the rise. "Due to dry northerly/northwesterly winds, the minimum temperatures had dipped in the city. However Mumbai's minimum temperatures rose as compared to a day earlier owing to the easterly winds being witnessed in the lower level," he said.

The humidity level on Sunday recorded by the IMD Colaba and Santa Cruz Observatory was 65% and 49% respectively.
