Southern Railway earnings see 10 per cent increase in 2018

CHENNAI: Southern Railway, which administers the railway network over Tamil Nadu and Kerala, has registered around 10% increase in its gross earnings in the current financial year up to December 2018, as compared to the previous year.


This was revealed by general manager R K Kulshrestha in his Republic day address. SR earned 6,150 crore in the April-December 2018 period. This is on account of better performance on the passenger and freight earnings. The cumulative passenger earnings stood at 3,331 crore, which is 4.6% more than previous year’s earnings. The number of passengers travelled has increased to 630.66 million from 604.16 million.


Originating freight earnings is 2,292 crore which is 16.52% higher when compared to the railway board’s target of 1,967 crore. The zone has introduced 54 trains over past 4 years and during the current year, has introduced 8 new trains namely and extended eight other trains. As many as 1,679 reserved special trains and 2,575 unreserved special trains were operated during rush periods.


In another release, Chennai division railway manager (DRM) Naveen Gulati stated total earning to be 2697.53 crore from April to December, showing an improvement of 21.78% over last year.
