BRUMADINHO, Brazil—The death toll from a dam that collapsed near this rural town jumped higher Saturday afternoon as authorities reported 34 fatalities, almost twice the number of people who were killed in a similar tragedy in 2015 at a dam about 80 miles away.
A dam owned by mining giant Vale SA burst Friday, releasing mining waste and flooding the company’s local offices and parts of this rural town with reddish-brown mud. Local authorities, who earlier today had reported 11 deaths, weren’t immediately available to say why...
